What is Ukuthasa? Who's Who? Changing People's Lives News How You Can Help

One of our biggest schemes has been the Lwandle housing project, which was funded with the help of the National Lottery’s Community Fund. Thirty-five families have now moved into new homes people who were previously living in one-room shacks made of sheet metal and whatever other scraps they could find.

Ukuthasa charity founders Gary and Nicky Welsh describe how the project came about: ‘This is a concrete example in every sense of how planning and hard work can result in something that changes people's lives for ever. We quickly learnt that consultation with the community was going to be our route to supporting and completing projects successfully and, after a series of meetings with the local community, the street committee and the locally elected councillors, we put together a scheme for low-cost housing. Our application to the UK Community Fund (formerly the National Lottery Charities Board) for overseas funding was successful and so began the development of Fatyela Square, comprising 35 houses and an amenity area intended for the exclusive use of those who live in the houses. The project is now complete and the families are living in their new homes.
