![]() Ukuthasa is a UK-based charity registered with the Charity Commission working, through partnership, with local communities in Africa to bring about change The trustees and charity employees recognised that for aid in Africa to be effective, local understanding of the headline problems affecting the continent, plus locally agreed solutions to these problems, are essential. The charity was established in 1996 by Gary and Nicky Welsh, who visited post-apartheid South Africa and were captivated by the country and its people. Overwhelmed by the poverty, deprivation and the horror of HIV/Aids they encountered in the informal settlements, they gave up their jobs in the UK and moved to South Africa to build bridges with local communities. In 2007 the charity’s goals expanded to include more African countries and to build on partnership models. Ukuthasa currently works in partnership with Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) in HIV/Aids education and counselling, working with local groups to provide pre-school education and giving support to small businesses with the aim of releasing people into an independent, fulfilled life. ![]() To empower and work in partnership with disadvantaged communities in Africa, helping to relieve poverty, improve housing conditions, preserve public health and provide vocational skill training and education. |
